In this month's issue

"Scones were the first thing I learned to cook. I was 14, the only boy in a home economics class of 30 girls, and very keen to prove that I could hold my own. My efforts were… not a triumph. Hard as a paving slab, and with a flavour no amount of jam or cream could rescue. I’ve not baked them since – until now. Turn to page 8 for a genius version by our head of food, Cassie, and you’ll see why. They’re light, fluffy and slathered with cream and strawberry compote. But that got us thinking: which should go first – jam or cream? It’s a debate that divides the UK (well, the South West, anyway). I’ve nailed my colours to the mast on the cover. Do you agree?

This month is also about the Good Food Show Summer – get a taste of it before you even arrive. Our skills editor Barney sits down with the stars you’ll see there, including James Martin and Lisa Faulkner, to talk about the dishes that define their summer (p114). Plus, the Show restaurant shares its one-hour entertaining menu (p58) to help you host with ease. Join the debate. Try the recipes. And we’ll see you at the Show."
